Genesis 28

Jacob Is Sent Away

1 So Isaac called Jacob and ablessed him and commanded him,

saying to him, “ cYou shall not take a wife from the daughters of Canaan.
2Arise, go to Paddan-aram, to the house of dBethuel your mother’s father; and from there take to yourself a wife from the daughters of Laban, your mother’s brother. 3May
Heb El Shaddai
,
fGod Almighty gbless you and hmake you fruitful and imultiply you, so that you may become a jmultitude of peoples.
4May He also give you the kblessing of Abraham, to you and to your
Lit seed
descendants with you, so that you may mpossess the land where you nlive as a stranger, which God gave to Abraham.”
5Then oIsaac sent Jacob away, and he went to Paddan-aram to Laban, son of Bethuel the Aramean, the brother of Rebekah, the mother of Jacob and Esau.

6 Now Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob and sent him away to Paddan-aram to take to himself a wife from there, and that when he blessed him he commanded him, saying, “ pYou shall not take a wife from the daughters of Canaan,” 7and that Jacob had obeyed his father and his mother and had gone to Paddan-aram. 8So Esau saw that qthe daughters of Canaan displeased

married, tbesides the wives that he had, Mahalath the daughter of Ishmael, Abraham’s son, the sister of Nebaioth.

Jacob’s Dream

10 Then Jacob departed from uBeersheba and went toward vHaran. 11And he

yparticular place and spent the night there, because the sun had set; and he took one of the stones of the place and made it a support for his head, and lay down in that place.
12And zhe had a dream, and behold, a ladder was set up on the earth with its top reaching to heaven; and behold, aathe angels of God were ascending and descending on it. 13Then behold, abthe Lord was standing

above it and said, “I am the Lord, adthe God of your father Abraham and the God of Isaac; the land on which you lie I will give aeto you and to afyour

descendants will also be like aithe dust of the earth, and you will

spread out akto the west and to the east, and to the north and to the south; and alin you and in your

descendants shall all the families of the earth be blessed.
15Behold, anI am with you and aowill keep you wherever you go, and apwill bring you back to this land; for aqI will not leave you until I have done what I have
Lit spoken to
promised you.”
16Then Jacob asawoke from his sleep and said, “ atThe Lord is certainly in this place, and I did not know it!” 17And he was afraid and said, “ auHow awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven!”

18 So Jacob got up early in the morning, and took avthe stone that he had placed as a support for his head, and set it up as a memorial stone, and poured oil on its top. 19Then he named that place

22And this stone, which I have set up as a memorial stone, biwill be God’s house, and bjof everything that You give me I will assuredly give a tenth to You.”
